Castletown, River Nore

August 2011

We are not sure of the ‘status’ of this swimming spot, but we do know that people do swim in Castletown, one of the few places we know of for swimming in Laois.

We swam in a small pool beneath the weir. This is an attractive location with a nature trail running along side it. When we were there the water was low and not great for swimming. Even then there was a strong flow so be careful. With the constant flow the water was cool and refreshing, just what you need on a sticky August day.

Nearby there is the old castle with a couple of seats and alongside the weir is a grassy area suitable for picnics.

Directions:

From Dublin you travel on the M7 and after exit 17 you watch out for an exit onto the N7 for Mountrath and Roscrea. Castletown is a few kilometres beyond Mountrath and is signposted. The swimming spot is at the bridge over the river.

We swim here a lot. Above the weir is a deep pool perfect for swimming. Theres a natural jacuzzi for a cold bath. The shallow areas are great for kids to potter.
