June 2011

Red Strand is smaller and less impressive than nearby Inchydony, but in its own way it is just as attractive.

Located in Dirk Bay, this is a sheltered beach with good views across to Galley Head lighthouse on the nearby peninsula. The water is clear with good depth. It was wavy when we swam there, but calmer than Inchydony. If you are looking for a leisurely swim this is probably a better bet.

The beach itself is fairly open, but there are rocks at either end which will give you shelter. Access to the beach is from the roadside and it will be a short lift with a buggy. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible. There are toilets but they were locked in June. There is some space at the roadside to park cars but no designated car park.
